Posted on : October 30 2015

Selangor became the second state in Malaysia to recognize the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools Unified Examination Certificate (UEC). This was announced by the Menteri Besar Azmin Ali when he tabled the state’s budget at the state legislative assembly on Friday, 30 October 2015. The first state to recognize the UEC was Sarawak. As a result of the Sarawak recognition, UEC holders can now apply to Unimas in Sarawak. With the Selangor recognition, they can now also apply to Unisel which is Selangor state university. The recognition will take effect at the end of 2015.

There are 60 independent secondary Chinese schools across the country. They are independent in the sense that they are not funded by government. These schools prepare students for a secondary school curriculum that differs from the national secondary school curriculum. The main medium of instruction is Mandarin, although Bahasa Malaysia and English are taught as compulsory subjects. At the end of their studies, students sit for examinations said by the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong). According to the Menteri Besar, about 3,000 students complete their secondary education with the UEC every year.
